This is a real academic term that got hijacked. When your kid uses it, they're not referencing a sociology textbook. They're repeating a talking point from manosphere content that frames women as fundamentally disloyal and calculating. It's used to justify resentment. If your teen is casually dropping 'hypergamy' in conversation, they've been watching a LOT of a very specific type of content.
