Definition
Overpowered. Something that's too strong, too good, or unfairly dominant. From gaming where an 'OP' character or weapon needs to be nerfed because it's ruining the balance. Now used for anything excessively good or effective: 'that teacher's curve is OP,' 'sleep is OP.' Also means 'Original Poster' on Reddit, but the gaming meaning is what your kid is using when they say it out loud.
Translation for Parents
When your kid says something is 'OP,' they mean it's unfairly good or overly effective. It started in video games where certain characters are too powerful, but now it applies to anything. A teacher who always gives extra credit is OP. Noise-canceling headphones are OP. It's a compliment wrapped in gaming language, basically saying 'this is so good it feels like cheating.'
Examples
“noise canceling headphones are OP i cant hear anything”
“Noise-canceling headphones are amazing, I can't hear anything”
“that teacher is OP she gives extra credit on everything”
“That teacher is great, she gives extra credit on everything”
